Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa Training

Build the confidence to recognise, respond to, and support adults experiencing mental health challenges.

Around one in five New Zealand adults will experience a mental health challenge in any given year. Whether it is someone you work with, play sport with, care about, or see in your community, knowing how to start a supportive conversation can make a meaningful difference.

Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Aotearoa is a practical, evidence-based two-day workshop that helps everyday people learn what to look for, what to say, and how to guide someone toward appropriate support.

Why attend this workshop?

This face-to-face course gives participants practical tools to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.

Recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health challenges in adults.

Respond with confidence when someone may be experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.

Start open, supportive conversations about mental health in a safe and respectful way.

Use the five-step ALGEE action plan to offer support and encourage professional or other help.

What you will learn

The workshop covers key topics including depression, anxiety, psychosis, problematic substance use, non-suicidal self-injury, suicidal thoughts and behaviours, panic attacks, traumatic events, and other situations where timely support matters.

The programme is backed by robust research and adapted for Aotearoa New Zealand, with input from Māori, Pacific and rainbow communities, people with lived experience, and clinical advisors.

Participants receive the Standard MHFA workshop manual, fourth edition, specially adapted for Aotearoa New Zealand and filled with practical information and resources to reinforce the learning.

Become a Mental Health First Aider

People who complete Standard MHFA become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), joining a growing network of people equipped with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to support adults experiencing mental health challenges across Aotearoa New Zealand.
